Region

The unemployment rate went up  between December and January in the counties served by Black Forest Broadcasting according to figures just released by the Department of Labor and Industry. Potter County saw an increase from 5.1% to 6:1%. McKean went up from 5.0% to 5.6%; Cameron increased from 5.7% to 6.2%. Tioga saw an uptick from 4.4% to 4.9%; and Elk County went up from 3.7% to 4.3%. Meanwhile, the rate here in Pennsylvania went up from 3.9% to 4.3% and the national rate went down slightly from 3.5% to 3.4%.

 

McKean County

Troopers at Lewis Run are investigating two recent thefts. $4,000 was stolen from a 29 year old Lewis Run resident March 9. And, $3,000 was stolen from a fuel card belonging to McKean Trucking LLC of Smethport January 17.

A 19 year old Eldred woman was scammed out of $1400 in an online theft last week. State police at Lewis Run said the victim sent three Vanillagift cards to a cyber crook last Wednesday.

State police at Lewis Run arrested a 17 year old Smethport boy for a physical harassment for an incident on a school bus on White Hollow in Norwich Township, March 9. An 11 year old boy is listed as the victim.

Both students involved in an altercation last Wednesday in the Port Allegany High School parking lot have been cited for physical harassment. One has been identified as a 14 year old Port Allegany boy and the other a 16 year old boy.

A possible case of child abuse is being investigated by state police at Lewis Run. The suspect is a 30 year old Port Allegany man and the victim is an 8 year old Port Allegany girl.

Two Phillipsburg PA residents were arrested by Lewis Run State police for drug possession. Charges against  51 year old Mary Jane Bennett and 28 year old Zachery Trump were filed in District Court. Authorities say when they stopped a 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac on the Burning Well Road in Sergeant Township on the afternoon of March 2, they found the driver was arrested for possession of marijuana  and the passenger for possession of untaxed cigarettes. Cops didn’t say which was which.

A Wellsville resident was committed to the McKean County Jail after being arraigned on DUI and drug possession charges, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct March 12. Troopers claim  during a  traffic stop 24 year old Christopher Vargas was found to be driving his 2015 Dodge Ram under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Tioga County

A 4l year old Tioga, PA man was committed to the Tioga County Jail pending arraignment for violating a Protection From Abuse order last Monday on Mann Hill Road in Tioga Township. The order had been filed on behalf of a34 year old Tioga woman.
