Unemployment improved between November and December  in three out of five counties served by Black Forest Broadcasting. The jobless rate here in Potter County went up slightly from 5.0% to 5.1%; Cameron County saw an increase from 5.5% to 5.7%. However, McKean County saw a decrease  from 5.1% to 5.0%,Tioga County realized a decrease from 4.6% to 4.4% and Elk County improved from 3.9% to 3.7% during the period. Adams County had the best rate in Pennsylvania, holding steady at 2.8%. Forest County was at the bottom of the list, but did see an improvement from 5.9% to 5.7%. Pennsylvania’s rate during the period was down from 4.0% to 3.9 while the US rate went down from 3.7% to 3.5%.

McKean County

McKean County District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer reports that the Pennsylvania Superior Court has affirmed the conviction and sentence of a Bradford man convicted of stabbing another man in 2020. Matthew Howard was charged with stabbing another man in the neck on July 24, 2020 in the City of Bradford. A jury trial occurred in 2021 and a bench warrant was issued for Howard. The jury convicted him of Aggravated Assault (Serious Bodily Injury); Aggravated Assault (Bodily Injury with a Deadly Weapon); Simple Assault; Recklessly Endangering Another Person; Terroristic Threats; and Possessing an Instrument of Crime. Following his conviction, he was sentenced to 7 years to 14 years in prison and 1 year of consecutive probation. On a separate case, he was sentenced to another term of 1 year to 2 year consecutive for the crime of Inmate Procuring Weapon. By opinion filed January 17, 2023, the Superior Court affirmed the judgment of sentence.

State police at Lewis Run arrested 23 year old Blake Wian of Smethport for defiant criminal trespass for an incident early Friday morning at 305 E. Main Street Smethport. Troopers claim Wian entered a vehicle without the owner’s permission few minutes before 3:00 am  but did not take anything.

ELK County

DUI charges are pending against a 23 year old Johnsonburg man who was stopped by troopers on Weidow Crest Drive in St. Marys early Sunday morning. The suspect, whose name was not released, was taken to Bradford Regional Medical Center for a blood draw.

Cameron County

State police at Emporium arrested a 27 year old Pittsburgh woman for DUI after stopping her 2016 Kia Sportage early Sunday morning on Route 120 in Shippen Township for traffic violations.

Tioga County

Mansfield state police arrested a 22 year old Mansfield resident for shop lifting at Walmart Sunday afternoon. Troopers claim the suspect stole a package of macaroni and cheese valued at $5.27.

A 60 year old Westfield woman has been charged with simple trespass. Authorities allege the suspect, whose name was withheld, walked onto the porch at the residence of a 58  year old Westfield woman on Potter Brook Road even though the residence is posted with multiple “No  Trespassing signs”.
