The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announces that on February 9, 2022, James Burrous, age 47, of Tioga County, Pennsylvania, was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Matthew W. Brann to 51 months’ imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release for his role in a marijuana grow operation.
According to United States Attorney John C. Gurganus, Burrous possessed more than 100 marijuana plants that he intended to distribute. When a search warrant was executed on Burrous’s home in February of 2017, other controlled substances such as Dimethyltryptamine(“DMT”) and lysergic acid diethylamide (“LSD”) were also recovered. Co-defendant, Zack Boyer, age 37, of Tioga County, was previously sentenced to 57 months’ imprisonment for his role in conspiring with Burrous to manufacture and distribute controlled substances. The case was investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Alisan V. Martin prosecuted the case. This case was also part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts.PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime.
State police at Mansfield arrested a 52 year old Blossburg man Friday afternoon for violating a Protection from Abuse order on S. Main Street in Richmond Township. The alleged victim is a 62 year old Blossburg woman.
An 18 year old Millerton resident has been arrested for drug possession after troopers stopped his 2010 Chevrolet on Route 49 in Lawrence Township during the early morning of January 31.
McKean County
A Kane woman was seriously injured in an accident Friday afternoon in Wetmore Township, McKean County. According to state police at Lewis Run, Melanie Nystrom was going north on Route 321 when ice flew off a southbound vehicle and hit the windshield on her 2017 Subaru Outback. Nystrom was taken to UPMC Kane for treatment of serious injuries. Her car had to be towed from the scene. The offending unit is believed to be a dark colored pick up and anyone with information is asked to call state police at the Lewis Run barracks.
Both Smethport residents involved in an argument Friday night in Keating Township, McKean County. Troopers say when they were call to a home on Kent Hollow they found a 62 year man and a 36 year old woman had subjected each other to unwanted physical contact.
Elk County
Ridgway state police investigated a theft Friday evening victimizing a Kersey couple. Thieves stole $250 from a Venmo Account belonging to a 55 year old man and 62 year old woman.

Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers Announces over $123,000
in Scholarships is available. There are currently over to 40 scholarship funds administered by CFTT. In 2021, more than $80,000 in scholarships was awarded to 45 students. Scholarships are available to high school seniors with plans to continue their post-secondary education by attending a four-year college or university, community college, or two-year trade or technical school. Applicants for all scholarships demonstrate individual excellence in areas such as community service, leadership, sports, music, academics and other unique characteristics.
