This is Police Week. National Police Week recognizes officers who risk their lives for the rest of us, which they do every day. McKean County DA Stephanie Vattenburg Shafer remembered two McKean County police who died on the job. “Patrolman Steve Jerman and Sergeant David Distrola are etched in our hearts and minds as symbols of heroic sacrifice as both lost their lives in the line of duty. Heroes run toward danger that the rest of us run from. And for that, we are forever grateful. We honor and salute Bradford Township Police, Bradford City Police, Foster Township Police, Kane Borough Police, University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Police, Otto Eldred Regional Police, Smethport Borough Police, Port Allegany Police, Sheriffs’ Department, Game Commission, Pennsylvania State Police, McKean County Detectives’ Bureau, and McKean County Drug Task Force.
No call is a routine call for these officers. Yet they respond not knowing if it will be their last.
Their families give up their time with their loved ones and we recognize their sacrifices as well. In a time where the actions of a few around the country overshadow the honorable work of the majority, I urge you to join me in honoring our local police who perform their duties with the utmost honor, who hold themselves in the highest regard, and who bravely run toward the danger that we can’t face ourselves. On behalf of the McKean County District Attorney’s Office, I thank you Ladies and Gentlemen. We are honored to work with you.”
